If the only physical exercise you are getting is walking your dog and the only mental exercise is working a crossword puzzle, there is a place for you if you are 50 or older. It is the Carl Gipson Senior Center of Everett, located at 3025 Lombard Ave.
There you will find just the right program to get you motivated and out of your rut. All forms of physical exercise are available and you are sure to find just the right one for your ability. To exercise your brain, there are classes in many topics — you could learn a new language or learn to use your computer to its full potential. The table tennis activity is growing. I prefer to call it “ping pong” as it was known when almost everyone had a ping pong table in their den, basement or garage.
It may take two to tango, but I recently met a ping pong player who really personified “If life hands you a lemon, make lemonade.” He is an amputee. He has lost his left arm. But it takes only one hand to hold a paddle and he is in there competing with the very best. If you are new to the game, Howard Grossman (world class champion) will teach you. There will be a tournament on May 19 and you are welcome to come and watch. It may be the right sport for you. There is no fee to join the Senior Center thanks to the Everett taxpayers’ concern for our elderly citizens.
On behalf of more than 10,000 past and present members, thank you for giving us a “home away from home.”
