To all of the fossil fuel defenders who are now suddenly worried about the environmental impact of lithium mining, I have a question: What changed?
Where was your faux outrage over the mining of lithium for every computer, cellphone, rechargeable toothbrush, beard trimmer, et al. in existence that uses it? Why is it only now that electric cars are gaining in popularity over internal combustion vehicles that you are becoming concerned about it? Is it because Fox News got the shoulder tap from the oil industry to come to its rescue with some negative spin about lithium?
I’m not saying that there is no negative impact resulting from lithium extraction. In the face of your apologist attitude toward CO2-emitting gas guzzlers, however, your sudden concern with its sustainability seems disingenuous. The point of transitioning to electric cars isn’t about eliminating all environmental impacts, but rather is about minimizing them. At least until we develop something that does eliminate them.
