Venus, if you will

There’s a little black spot on the sun today: The planet Venus made its six-hour, 40-minute transit across the face of the sun on Wednesday. But many who watched the little dot inch across the sun seemed underwhelmed, even though the spectacle won’t be visible from Earth again for 105 years.

Just our luck. Now we’ve got to find cheap storage for 105 years for all the “Transit of Venus” T-shirts and baseball caps that we didn’t sell this time.

What? No aspirin? A long-lost report by the first doctor to reach President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre reveals some intriguing details about events following the shooting. Dr. Charles Leale’s report says that the doctor immediately ordered a brandy and water for Lincoln and probed the president’s head wound with his little finger.

Yes, medicine has seen a lot of advances since 1865, but we wonder now how anyone survived anything worse than a paper cut during the Civil War.

Pain of thrones: Queen Elizabeth II capped the final day of the Diamond Jubliee celebrating her 60-year reign with members of the royal family, with one exception. Her husband, Prince Philip remained in a hospital with a bladder infection.

We hope, for the prince’s sake, his doctor ordered something more effective than brandy and water and kept his fingers to himself.
