Community sports roundup: Ex-Glacier Peak soccer players honored

A pair of Glacier Peak High School products who ventured north have received community college All-American recognition.

Cameron Miller and Keegan Rubio, members of the Whatcom Community College men’s soccer team that finished as the Northwest Athletic Conference runner-up, were honored by being named to the 2018 United Soccer Coaches West Region All-American Team.

Miller, a sophomore defender, was selected to the first team after registering two goals and two assists in 19 games. Rubio, a freshman forward, was named to the second team after tallying 11 goals and five assists in 21 games.

Miller and Rubio were the only two players from NWAC selected to the teams, which included players from schools in Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Utah and Wyoming.

Bender named to NWHL All-Star team

Snohomish native Lexi Bender was selected by Team Szabados for the National Women’s Hockey League All-Star Game when the league held its draft last Wednesday.

Bender, a 25-year-old who plays defense, is in her third season in the league. This was her second straight all-star nod. This season she has four assists in eight games for the Boston Pride, helping the Pride to a 6-2 record and a tie with the Minnesota Whitecaps for first place in the five-team league.

The All-Star Game takes place Feb. 10 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

Belk, Smith help EWU into FCS semis

Kamiak High School graduate Henderson Belk and Mariner High School graduate Anthany Smith made key contributions as the Eastern Washington University football team defeated University of California, Davis 34-29 on Saturday in Cheney to advance to the Football Championship Serie semifinals.

Belk, a senior tight end, had a breakout performance as he caught five passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. Smith, a freshman safety, had an interception and was in on five tackles.

The third-seeded Eagles will face seventh-seeded Maine on Saturday in Cheney.

SnoKing Rapids claim Recreation Cup

The SnoKing Rapids FC U12 girls soccer team, based out of Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood and Woodway, claimed a state title when it won the Washington Youth Soccer Recreational Cup state championship Saturday in Tukwila. The Recreation Cup is for the fourth tier of youth teams in the state, involving teams that do not hold tryouts.

The Rapids won the title by beating the TSC Raging Thunder 3-0 in the semifinals, then topping the TSC Crazy Cleats 2-0 in the championship game.

The Rapids are comprised of Lily Weimken, Ali Schell, Mena Waters, Adeline Cox, Julianna Rioja, Reese Jordan, Annika Beckstrom, Grace Haney, Ava Shin, Kenley Koehler, Sadie Parker, Maddie Jones, Cienna Moss and Laila Christensen.

Weightlifting event this weekend at EvCC

Team Phoinix, a USA Powerlifting team from Lake Stevens, is hosting its annual USA Powerlifting Team Phoinix Holiday Classic on Saturday and Sunday at the Walt Price Fitness Center on the campus of Everett Community College. More than 160 lifters from across Washington are expected to participate in the event, which is a qualifier for the 2019 USA Powerlifting National Championships.
