Vote for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Week for May 20-26

The Athlete of the Week nominees for May 20-26. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with the next poll and in next Tuesday’s paper.

Mia Hoekendorf | Everett | Softball

Hoekendorf, a freshman, threw five no-hit innings with six strikeouts and also hit a two-run triple to lead Everett to a 10-0 victory over Snohomish in the Class 3A District 1 championship game on May 16. Hoekendorf won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for May 13-19 by claiming 741 (38.71%) of the 1,914 votes.

This week’s nominees

Cole Balen | Archbishop Murphy | Boys Tennis

Balen, a senior, won the Class 2A state championship in singles on May 24-25 in Seattle. He won all four of his matches in straight sets, finishing it off with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Sequim’s Garrett Little in the championship match.

Conrad Chisman | Stanwood | Boys Golf

Chisman, a senior, won the Class 3A state championship, shooting a two-round score of 143 at The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie – The Links on May 21-22 in Lacey. He won the tournament by one stroke.

Pearce Hess | Grace Academy | Boys Track and Field

Hess, a senior, swept the sprints at the Class 1B state meet on May 25 in Yakima. He won the state championship in the 100 meters in a time of 11.37 seconds, the 200 in 22.88 and the 400 in 50.83.

Shukurani Ndayiragije | Everett | Boys Track and Field

Ndayiragije, a senior, finished in the top two in all three jumping events at the Class 3A state meet on May 23-25 in Tacoma. He won the state title in the high jump with a height of 6 feet, 8 inches, and he placed second in both the triple jump (47-2 1/2) and long jump (23-1 1/2).

Chanyoung Park | Jackson | Girls Golf

Park, a freshman, won the Class 4A state championship, shooting a two-round score of 146 at Creek at Qualchan Golf Course on May 21-22 in Spokane. Leading by a single stroke heading into the final hole, she finished with an eagle to end up winning by four.

Yanina Sherwood | Jackson | Softball

Sherwood, a senior, led the Timberwolves on a dominating run to their second straight Class 4A state championship on May 24-25 in Richland. She pitched all four of Jackson’s games, allowing just one earned run and striking out 37 in 26 innings. She also drove in seven runs as a batter.

Maya Velasquez | Marysville Pilchuck | Girls Track and Field

Velasquez, a junior, won the high jump at the Class 3A state meet on May 24 in Tacoma. She cleared a personal-best height of 5 feet, 4 inches, matching the height of Walla Walla’s Jailyn Davenport, but taking first because she had fewer misses during the competition.
