Guards key Panthers win

BELLEVUE – In the marquee game of the 2005 Les Schwab Hoop Challenge, the Snohomish senior guards took center stage, as the Panthers beat the King’s Knights 53-37 in a non-conference game.

Snohomish guards Brittany Marshall and Daesha Henderson combined for 37 points and played solid defense on King’s standout guard Sara Mosiman to lead the Panthers, who improved to 3-1 overall.

The game was a battle of two state powerhouses, with the 4A Panthers, last year’s state runner-up, building an 11-point halftime lead over the Knights, who are the defending 2A state champs.

In the second half, Snohomish battened down the hatches with a stifling defense, holding King’s to 19 points – with just five coming in the third quarter.

The focus of the Snohomish squad was UW-bound Mosiman. The 5-10 guard, who was last year’s Cascade Conference player of the year, was held to 12 points and Henderson was the main reason. The senior Snohomish guard pressured Mosiman most of the game and finished the contest with six steals.

“(The Knights) are a gifted offensive team,” said Snohomish coach Ken Roberts. “We concentrated on what we’re supposed to do according to the game plan.”

Henderson stormed out of the gates offensively as well, scoring Snohomish’s first 11 points of the game. The star guard, who is headed to Seattle Pacific University next fall, finished with a game-high 26 points. She shot 9-for-13 from the floor.

Marshall hit a pair of big 3-pointers in the second quarter to open the game up and create a lead which would not be threatened.

“I just needed to be confident with myself,” said Marshall. “So I knew that as a senior I needed to step it up.”

King’s, which lost its first game of the season to fall to 4-1, was shorthanded from the start, suiting just seven players due to injuries as opposed to a full dozen for the Panthers.

Snohomish returns to Wesco league play Wednesday when it hosts Oak Harbor. The Knights travel to Burien Wednesday for a matchup with Kennedy.
