King’s Knights
SHORELINE — The King’s football team accomplished a longtime goal for the first time in the 2015 season.
Now, the Knights are looking to do it again.
For the first time in school history, King’s made it to the state semifinals at Tacoma Dome. After six consecutive losses in the state quarterfinals, the seventh time was the charm for the Knights, who then won to clinch a berth in the 1A title game.
Which was, at least for King’s coach Jim Shapiro, the icing on the cake.
“My personal goal was to play a football game inside the Tacoma Dome and we achieved that the week before,” Shapiro said. “We achieved what this program never had done before.”
Head coach: Jim Shapiro (20th season)
Key returners: Caleb Perry, Sr., RB/DB; Andrew Cline, Sr., RB/LB; Taylor Schoenfeld, Jr., OL/DL; Chris Metzger, Sr., OL/DL; Cole Critchlow, Sr., OL/DL.
Coach’s quote: “We start the year with (Burlington-Edison), Lakeside and Archbishop (Murphy). They’re all tough. For us it’s just going to be, ‘Always try to compete.’ If we can compete early and stay healthy, my prediction is we’ll be competing late.”
