PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Darrington girls earn state berth

PUYALLUP — Darrington Head Coach Ben Bryson spoke to his coaches about how difficult it would be to defeat the Northwest 1A/2B regular season champion La Conner three times in one season Tuesday night.

Now Bryson and the Darrington girls basketball team are playing for a 2B Tri-district Championship this Saturday.

With a stifling defense, and clutch plays throughout the fourth quarter, Darrington defeated La Conner for the third time this season, 36-25, clinching a spot in state tournament for the Loggers. Darrington will play at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Tri-district Championship.

Darrington’s Hailey Wales was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, Renee Cousins hit a 3-pointer with two minutes remaining to extend the Loggers lead to seven and Caresse Baker had a key steal as time winded down. It all culminated into Darrington clinching a state berth for the first time since 2005.

“Neither team could score in that first half,” Bryson said. “It came down to in the second half where every free throw was critical, every turnover was critical and every foul shot was critical.”

Darrington was 9-for-11 from the foul line in the second half and La Conner was 3-for-7.

“This is the fist time we have been in the Tri-district Championship game in a long time,” Bryson said.
