Silvertips drop 5-1 decision to Prince Albert

PRINCE ALBERT, Saskatchewan — The Everett Silvertips’ longest road trip of the season came to a sputtering end Saturday night.

The Tips completed their jaunt through the WHL’s East Division by falling 5-1 to the Prince Albert Raiders.

Everett finished 3-2-1-0 on the road trip, earning seven of a possible 12 points. However, the trip came to a disappointing end for the Tips with Friday’s late overtime loss to Saskatoon followed by Saturday’s lopsided decision.

Brandon Herrod scored twice and Mike Winther, Mark McNeill and Jonathan Parker also scored for Prince Albert (12-17-2-2), which outshot Everett 52-29. Eric Williams earned the win in goal with 28 saves.

Tyler Maxwell scored the lone goal for Everett (14-14-2-3), which has its final three games before the Christmas break at home. Luke Siemens, getting his fourth start of the trip after starting just four times in the Tips’ first 27 games, finished with 47 saves.

Everett played without two key players. Winger Kellan Tochkin, the team’s second-leading scorer, sat out his second straight game because of what the Tips are calling an upper-body injury. Defenseman Ryan Murray left for Canada’s selection camp for the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Prince Albert opened the scoring 10 minutes, 7 seconds into the game. Siemens made a save, but Winther batted the puck in from out of the air, giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Everett tied it at 18:02. Markus McCrea picked a defenseman’s pocket, made a move around the net and fed it our front for Maxwell to tap in, making it 1-1.

The Tips threatened in the second period, but the Raiders scored twice late to put Everett in a two-goal hole. Herrod gave Prince Albert the lead at 15:35, scoring in transition from a feed from Sebastian Svendsen. Then McNeill made it 3-1 with just 37 seconds remaining in the period, winning a faceoff to himself and putting a shot over Siemens’ shoulder.

Those late goals seemed to deflate the Tips, and the Raiders turned it into a rout in the third. Parker took advantage of a fortuitous bounce to score into an unguarded net at 4:46. Then Herrod scored his second at 8:23, scoring on a scramble in front of the Everett net to complete the scoring.
