SEATTLE — Former Arlington High School basketball standout Randi Richardson has been hired as an assistant women’s coach at Seattle Pacific University.
“I couldn’t be more excited,” Richardson said in a statement released by SPU. “The tradition of SPU and the success they’ve had — it’s a great opportunity for me. I’m just excited to get in here, get to work and meet all the girls and have a lot of fun.”
Richardson spent last season as an assistant girls basketball coach at Arlington High School. She helped lead the Eagles to a second-place finish at the Class 4A state tournament. Arlington (22-5) lost to Mead 58-42 in the title game.
After graduating from high school in 2006, Richardson played one season at the University of San Francisco. She then transferred to the University of Wyoming, where she started 93 of 96 games over her three-year career, finishing with averages of 25.9 minutes, 3.2 points and 2.8 assists per game.
“I’ve known Randi since she was a high school senior, and one thing I’ve always liked is she’s super positive and has great energy,” SPU head coach Julie Heisey said a press release. “She has a lot of knowledge. And because she has just recently played, she will have a lot of experience that is current that she can draw on. She’s going to be great working with our kids.”
The hiring of Richardson completes Heisey’s staff for the 2013-14 season. Steve Steele came aboard as the lead assistant in July, and longtime assistant Sasha Anderson returns for her ninth year.
World Baseball Challenge
The United States posted a 1-4 record in its first five games at the World Baseball Challenge in Prince George, British Columbia. The tournament began Aug. 13 and runs through Thursday.
The U.S. team is made up of former Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges players, including pitcher Gunnar Swanson, outfielder Ty Holm, third baseman Nate Mullins and shortstop Max Whitt from Everett Community College, and infielder Bobby LeCount from Edmonds CC. Also on the roster is pitcher Matt Cooper of Marysville, who played at Bellevue College.
Mike MacCulloch of Edmonds CC is an assistant coach and general manager for the U.S. team.
Through Sunday’s games, Cuba led the standings with a 4-0 record, followed by Chinese Taipei (4-1), Japan (2-2), the United States (1-4) and Canada (0-4). The top three teams advance to playoff round, with the first-place team earning an automatic berth in Thursday’s gold-medal game.
