At 5-foot-11, Jill Frable is Darrington’s tallest player and among the tallest in the Northwest 1A/2B League. Naturally, she likes to use her height to frustrate the opposition. “My favorite thing is blocking shots,” Frable said. “I’m one of our team’s defense mechanisms and I try to keep the other team from scoring.” Those who fear rejection better avoid Frable.

Super swat Frable said her most memorable blocked shot came last season against Concrete. As a Concrete player prepared to shoot a 3-point attempt from the corner, Frable ran toward her, jumped and batted the ball out of bounds. Fans of both teams oohed and aahed, she said.

Coach’s corner One of the top students in her class, Frable uses her intelligence on the court. “Anything you tell Jill, she’ll make happen. She’s a smart kid,” Darrington coach Ben Bryson said. “

Leading the way Frable and teammate Kristy Turner are Darrington’s co-captains. Frable said her role as the school’s Associated Student Body president helps her feel comfortable as a team captain. “You get used to speaking in front of people,” she said.

What’s the rush? Frable said she used to hurry her shots and pass too quickly but now she’s more confident with the ball. “I’ve gotten better at knowing where the defense is and being able to square up and maybe pump fake and drive,” she said. “I have a lot more moves.”

Hot shot Many players have a favorite spot to shoot from. For Frable it’s either elbow, where the foul line meets the sides of the key. She hates using the backboard. A swish is more her style.

Just for laughs Frable’s favorite movie genre is comedy. Some of her top picks include “Super Troopers” (2001) and “Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny,” currently in theaters.

I wish I could travel to: Europe. Frable wants to visit Rome and Paris.

I wish I knew how to: Do better on calculus homework. The demanding math class is one of Frable’s three advanced-placement courses. The others are physics and English.
