EVERETT — More than a year after a 13-month-old died of a fentanyl overdose in south Everett, police have arrested five people in connection with the case.
The baby’s death happened in April 2024, one of three overdoses involving children under the age of 2 that same week.
On April 24, 2024, emergency responders responded to reports of a toddler not breathing at an apartment on West Casino Road, police said. First responders attempted life-saving measures and transported the child to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, but the child later died.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner ruled the death was caused by drug poisoning, the release stated.
Police said officers found blue fentanyl pills scattered on the floor and a strong odor of burning fentanyl in the home. Detectives also reported discovering drug paraphernalia throughout the apartment and obtained surveillance footage of adults using narcotics in the presence of children.
After a yearlong investigation, police said they arrested five suspects this April. All have been booked into the Snohomish County Jail.
Authorities have warned about the extreme danger fentanyl poses to children, emphasizing that even small amounts can be fatal due to children’s low body weight and lack of opioid tolerance.
The Everett Police Department advises calling 911 immediately if you suspect someone has overdosed and, if available, administering naloxone while waiting for emergency responders.
