EVERETT — A child and a teen were transported to a hospital after being shot Monday evening in Snohomish County.
Around 6:30 p.m. Monday, Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a shooting in the 13100 block of 21st Drive SE in unincorporated Snohomish County between Everett and Mill Creek, the sheriff’s office wrote.
The two boys, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, were part of a group spray-painting graffiti on a building Monday. A 20-year-old male then approached the group and shot the 11-year-old and the 17-year-old before fleeing the area, the sheriff’s office wrote in a release.
The 11-year-old was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and is in critical condition, the sheriff’s office wrote. The 17-year-old sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was released from Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.
A short time later, sheriff’s deputies found the suspect riding a motorized scooter near the 11900 block of 37th Drive SE. He initially fled on foot and tossed a handgun on the ground before surrendering and being taken into custody, the press release said.
The suspect was booked into Snohomish County Jail for investigation of two counts of first-degree assault.
Detectives said the investigation is still active, but they believe the shooting was gang related, the sheriff’s office wrote.
