The older I get, the more I seem to dislike subcompacts.

Not sure if that’s just the grumpy in me, my predisposition to the philosophy that bigger is better, or my logic that the laws of physics place me at an insurmountable disadvantage if – or when – an accident occurs.

But I’m going to make an exception for the 2016 Honda Fit EX-L subcompact, five-door hatchback. I guess it’s because it creates the illusion I’m driving a bigger vehicle.

Outstanding versatility is fundamental to the design of the Fit. It delivers class-leading interior space and clever configurations courtesy of its center-mounted fuel tank and ingenious Magic Seat. The Fit epitomizes functionality with spacious and comfortable seating for five, with the ability to accommodate large amounts of cargo including long and tall items.

Our family of four was reunited for Mother’s Day and the Fit left everyone satisfied with leg and head room aplenty – even in the back seat. An added bonus is the Fit’s fresh, dynamic exterior and 41 miles per gallon fuel rating down the highway by the EPA.

Exterior highlights include headlights integrated into a solid grille with aggressive lower intake, chiseled sides and a tapered roofline that terminates in a color-matched spoiler. There are eight colors to choose from, including several vibrant options.

The Fit is powered by a 1.5-liter DOHC i-VTEC four-cylinder engines that tries so hard, you can hear it winding up. It’s mated to a continuously variable transmission. The tandem delivers a nice balance of power, torque and response.

Now in its third generation, and refreshed last year, the Fit has been a stalwart in Car and Driver’s Top-10 List and has acquired legions of fans. “The new Fit has been a tremendous hit with buyers seeking a fun, practical and stylish transportation solution,” said Jeff Conrad, senior VP and GM of Honda. “It’s a satisfying car for a wide variety of needs and lifestyles.”

A high level of standard and available features are offered in three trims – LX, EX, and EX-L. Standard on all Fit models are auto on-off headlights, LED brake lights, Bluetooth and center storage console with armrest. My tester included push-button start, navigation, rear- and side-view cameras, cruise, air conditioning, USB, satellite radio, heated seats and an AM/FM/CD stereo system with six speakers.

A long list of standard safety features helps move the Fit over the top. Highlights include vehicle stability assist with traction control, side curtain airbags with rollover sensor, electronic brake distribution, and brake assist.

The Fit has received the highest available crash-safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – a five-star overall vehicle score – and a TOP SAFETY PICK rating from the IIHS.
