2018 Lexus RX 350: top-of-the-line SUV keeps you up with the Joneses

If you want to keep up with the Joneses — at least in the environs of Mukilteo — you need to have a Lexus parked in your driveway.

I did — for a week — with the 2018 Lexus RX 350 front-wheel drive sports utility. And now I can say the Joneses didn’t just purchase a status symbol, they purchased a top-of-the-line SUV that delivers across the board.

This bestselling vehicle delivers an ideal combination of SUV versatility, luxury sedan-like comfort and an exterior with a dramatic mix of sharp creases and curves. The focal point is the Lexus signature spindle grille, complemented by an elegant Nightfall Mica coat of paint, and 20-inch super chrome alloy wheels.

The RX 350 is powered by a 3.5-liter, 24-valve V6 engine with variable valve timing mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The combination musters 295-horsepower, and achieves an EPA rating of 23 miles per gallon in combination city/highway driving.

Drivers can exert more control over the RX by choosing from several driving modes. Normal mode provides an ideal everyday balance of performance and energy conservation. Sport puts an edge on powertrain responsiveness and Eco mode operates the powertrain at its most efficient level.

The midsize, two-row SUV seats five adults in comfort, with 40/20/40 split folding seats to increase cargo space as needed. Behind the rear seats, there’s enough space to carry up to four large suitcases or multiple golf bags. A rear power lift-gate provides easy access via the push of a fob button.

My tester included a luxury package ($4,180) that added form-fitting, leather-trimmed seats, power-heated and folding side mirrors, wood and aluminum cabin trim, heated steering wheel and LED ambient illumination.

Other included options included a blindspot monitor with rear cross-traffic braking ($1,065), panoramic moon roof ($1,850), and a 12.3-inch navigation system with 835-watt Mark Levinson premium audio package and 15 speakers ($3,200).

What makes the Lexus RX 350 stand apart is what you get as standard equipment. That list is extra long and extra nice. Two of the nicest features are a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and all-speed dynamic radar cruise control. Other goodies include lane-departure warning, intelligent high beams, auto dual-zone climate control with rear vents, backup camera and LED fog lamps.

Two years after its introduction, the fourth-generation RX — which is assembled in Canada – sees several changes for 2018. Most notably, the Enform Safety Connect and Enform Service Connect are now complimentary for the first 10 years of ownership and provide owners with 24/7/365 roadside assistance. Both were previously offered with a one-year trial.
