2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0T SE 4Motion: connected, intelligent

While the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0T SE 4Motion may technically qualify as a compact SUV, its new dimensions belie that fact.

The new, second-generation model is almost a foot longer than its predecessor, which means cargo area is 58 percent bigger – for people like me, that’s almost like having an extra storage unit – for free!

Tie-down hooks help keep things in place and a 12-volt outlet is included. An actual full-size spare tire is placed below the cargo deck to save space and 40/20/40 split seats allow the two-row Tiguan to accommodate skis, fishing gear or other large items.

The Tiguan seats four adults comfortably and comes in S, SE, SEL and SEL Premium trim levels.

This version sports a wider, lower stance and combined with sharper character lines and the vehicle’s LED lighting, has already garnered several European design awards.

Roof rails are standard, allowing outdoors enthusiasts to upgrade the vehicle with Volkswagen accessories such as bike, kayak and ski carriers. The new Tiguan has a lower lift-in height for the tailgate, making it easier to load, no matter what cargo you’re carrying. The available towing hitch can be used to pull up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped

But enough with the embellishments. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.

Tiguan is powered with a 2.0T, 16-valve, turbocharged four-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection that is spirited, to say the least. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the duo generates 27 miles per gallon by the EPA.

My model was equipped with a dash of technology, enough to whet my appetite for the top-of-the-line models. Highlights included forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring (vital when pedestrians and drivers are both texting), rear-view camera, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, Bluetooth, USB ports, satellite radio and more.

In the creature comfort department, I was most impressed with the panoramic sunroof, sound system with six-speakers and CD player.

Volkswagen is committed to driving the development of more connected and intelligent vehicles, and the Car-Net connectivity system is a major element in achieving that goal. Features available through Car-Net are divided into three key areas: app-connect, security and service, and guide and inform.

All Tiguan models with 4Motion all-wheel drive feature Active Control, which allows the driver to select specific vehicle profiles based on driving conditions. It has four settings: on-road, snow, off-road and custom off-road. The singular user interface is highly intuitive, comprising both a rotary knob and a push-button.

VW’s doing something right. My just out-of-college daughter in her first year of teaching has her sights set on the Tiguan. And she – like her mother – is not into settling. They have high standards that will not, under any circumstance, be compromised.
