What’s the best-selling, three-row luxury sports utility vehicle of all time?
Acura’s MDX, of course.
And rather than resting on its laurels, the Japanese automaker continues to expand its repertoire. My tester was the 2019 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid with Advance and Tech packages in the front-wheel-drive version.
There are also SH-AWD, A-Spec, technology package and entertainment packages to mix and match. Basically, you can order an MDX to fit your lifestyle and family’s needs.
MDX seats seven adults in the lap of luxury, yet the hybrid still manages to produce 27-miles-per-gallon fuel efficiency in combined city/highway driving. The hybrid is powered by a 3.0L VTEC V6 engine with variable cylinder management paired with a nine-speed, dual clutch automatic transmission. The combo generates 321 horsepower.
Mine came with an active damper system to improve the vehicle’s ride, comfort and handling experience.
The Advance package includes a surround-view camera system, heated and ventilated sport seats with premium leather trim, heated second-row captains’ chairs, heated steering wheel, LED fog lights and rear-door sunshades.
It also gives you 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels with machine-finish accents along with extra wide 265/45 series tires and a Canyon Brown Metallic coat of enamel.
The Tech package brings Acura’s navigation system with voice recognition, ELS studio premium audio system, HD radio, blind-spot information, rear cross-traffic monitor, remote engine start, front and rear parking sensors and rain-sensing wipers.
Creature comforts not already mentioned include a power tailgate, power moon roof, heated power door mirrors, USB ports, Bluetooth, satellite radio Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, tri-zone climate control and four-way driver lumbar support.
The split-fold, third-row seats fold flat with the lift of a finger, expanding the cargo space to an area more than large enough to accommodate four full-size golf bags and the corresponding push carts.
All MDX trims will come standard with the AcuraWatch suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies, including collision-mitigation braking system with forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow and road-departure mitigation with lane-departure warning.
In addition to AcuraWatch technology, all MDXs boast a comprehensive array of active and passive safety features, including advanced front- and side-curtain airbags, front pre-tensioning seatbelts, four-channel anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution, vehicle stability assist with traction control and tire-pressure monitoring.
Acura’s MDX Sport Hybrid pretty much delivers across the board. You can tow big boy toys, cruise around town in luxurious comfort and efficiency, or transport stuff utilizing the vehicle’s extra-large cargo capacity. You can’t go wrong.
The MDX is manufactured exclusively in central Ohio, using domestic and globally sourced parts.
