2019 GMC Terrain: sleek, sporty compact crossover

The 2019 GMC Terrain is a second-generation compact crossover that has even more technology to compete in this hot category.

Terrain is the smallest GMC crossover, with the mid-size Arcadia next in line. It is offered in six trim levels and 11 configurations.

My tester was the SLT with all-wheel drive and a Summit White coat of paint outside and Black Edition interior. The Terrain cuts a sleek, sporty swatch, and with all-black 19-inch wheels it is easy on the eyes.

Terrain is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter, DOHC, I-4 engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and auto-manual. The combination delivers close to 200 horsepower, enough to satisfy in everyday driving situations.

The crossover seats up to five adults and was in the mid-20s mpg in combination of city/highway driving. The split second-row seats fold flat and provide increased cargo capacity and passenger seating as needed. The rig will even tow toys, and mine came equipped with an optional towing package ($450).

The Terrain delivers a better driving experience than many compact SUVs – in my humble opinion – holding its own on winding roads and showing maneuverability in tight quarters and parking. This GMC also provides a cushioned ride and was somewhat quiet.

Creature comforts are not in short supply, highlighted by a navigation system, dual-zone climate control, heated power driver’s seat with lumbar support, heated steering wheel, keyless entry, Bose AM/FM/XM stereo, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, 4G WiFi hotspot, 110v power outlet, USB port, GMC Infotainment system and more.

The most notable updates for this year are the addition of a full-speed adaptive cruise control system with stop and go, and front pedestrian braking. Both provide the driver with an extra dose of confidence in both freeway and city driving situations.

Call me an old fuddy-duddy, but I wasn’t a big fan of the Terrain’s “pull” forward buttons to put the car in drive, neutral and reverse positioned on the dash. The pushbuttons for park and the parking brake were easy, by comparison.

One safety feature worthy of special note is Teen Driver that allows a parent to pre-determine speed and volume limits. Other safety attributes include a rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, low-speed automatic forward braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-change alert, lane-keep assist and lane-departure warning.

The GMC Terrain comes with a three-year/36,000 mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty. Terrain is built by GM Mexico at the GM San Luis Potosi factory.
