EVERETT — An Edmonds man with a long history of epilepsy and previous collisions pleaded guilty Friday to vehicular homicide in Snohomish County Superior Court.
Ben Garnet Holt, 69, of Edmonds, was driving a pickup in November 2009 when he slammed into the back of a minivan at nearly 70 mph,
fatally injuring John Spudich. Holt acknowledged he was driving with disregard for the safety of others, according to the plea agreement.
Court papers describe Holt as confused at the scene of the crash. Blood tests later showed “a large amount” of an anticonvulsant medication.
Spudich, who was just days shy of turning 63, was in his minivan, waiting at a traffic light on 220th Street SW, when Holt crashed into him from behind. There was another pickup in front of the minivan. The force of the collision crumpled Spudich’s vehicle. He died in a hospital emergency room. The grandfather left behind a wife of 45 years.
Several members of his family were in court Friday.
The defense indicated it will seek a first-time offender waiver, which could result in sentence of 90 days or fewer.
The standard sentencing range is up to 20 months in prison. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Tobin Darrow said he will ask for a 15-month sentence, the minimum under sentencing guidelines.
Sentencing was set for April 25.
