KENNEWICK — A report by the Washington Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council has found that small modular nuclear reactors have promising potential as energy sources in the state.
The Tri-City Herald reported that Sen. Sharon Brown, R-Kennewick, introduced a bill on Wednesday to act on recommendations in the report and streamline the process for approving nuclear facilities.
The small reactors would have capacity of 300 megawatts or less per module and could be built in a factory before being moved to an operating location.
Brown says promoting nuclear power in Washington could improve both the environment and the state’s economy, as the nuclear industry could provide jobs in construction, manufacturing and other related high-tech fields.
