AquaSox pounded by Emeralds

EUGENE, Ore. — The Eugene Emeralds hit the AquaSox early and often as Everett fell 15-3 Thursday at PK Park.

Eugene (27-27) scored nine runs in the first two innings and finished the Northwest League baseball game with 15 hits against the AquaSox (26-27).

The game started out well for starter Ashton Izzi. With a 1-0 Everett lead thanks to Michael Arroyo’s RBI single in the top of the first, Izzi struck out Scott Bandura and Jonah Cox to open the bottom of the inning.

However, he would not get another batter out.

The 21-year-old right-hander hit Bo Davidson with a pitch, and James Tibbs hammered a two-run homer for a 2-1 Emeralds lead. After allowing a single to Justin Wishkoski, Izzi struck out Charlie Szykowny, but the ball got away from catcher Andrew Miller for a passed ball to keep the inning alive.

After an RBI single by Onil Perez and a walk to Zane Zielinski, Allan Saathoff relieved Izzi, who threw 36 pitches in 2/3 of an inning (3 hits, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 K, 1 BB).

Saathoff got out of the first without further damage, but there would be plenty in the second.

The right-hander out of Erskine College allowed two doubles and four singles before departing with two outs in the bottom of the second with the Frogs trailing 7-1. Eventually, all six of the batters who got hits off of Saathoff (1 IP, 6 H, 6 ER) ended up scoring after a throwing error by Miller and Dayson Croes single that pushed Eugene’s advantage to 9-1. Scott Bandura, up for the third time in two innings, finally ended the carnage with a flyout to left field.

The Emeralds essentially put it out of reach for the AquaSox in the fifth inning. Everett reliever Jordan Jackson allowed five hits, a walk and two earned runs. Three additional runs scored on Jackson’s throwing error, which put Eugene up 14-3.

Bright spots for the AquaSox included Miller’s home run and a triple by right fielder Lazaro Montes. Shortstop Cole Emerson went 2-for-3 with a walk and scored a run.

AquaSox pitcher Jesse Wainscott walked three and allowed a hit, but pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Brock Moore struck out three Emeralds during a scoreless eighth.
