I understand some wise-cracker has made stickers mocking Everett Mayor and Sound Transit boardmember Cassie Franklin as a “Queen Mayor.” I’ll just say this, then explain why: Your timing is horrendous.
First, the U.S. Navy is taking the pulse of Navy supporters like me with upcoming public meetings on April 1-3, both in-person and online. As students of Naval Station Everett and NAS Whidbey Island history know, in 1991, when NAS Whidbey Island was threatened with closure so too was Naval Station Everett. I have found Mayor Franklin receptive to my concerns that we need positive, tenacious outreach to defend and retain both excellent naval installations. This is the best time to rally behind our leaders and show support for the Navy’s defense of our nation and economy.
Furthermore, If NAS Whidbey Island gets cut or EA-18G Growlers are relocated to NAF El Centro, odds are Naval Station Everett will be cut next. Call this a message in a bottle to a friendly city.
Second, it’s Women’s History Month. It’s really tacky to mock women leaders who deliver results.
If this stunt were an application to be a paid right-wing influencer, maybe I’d understand. It’s still deplorable with a horrendous excuse for timing.
