EVERETT — A man was hospitalized with burns early Friday after an apartment fire in Everett’s Pinehurst neighborhood.
Around 2 a.m., fire crews responded to a blaze behind a mini-mart store at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Euclid Avenue, the Everett Fire Department said.
The man tried to extinguish the fire himself and rescue his dog before firefighters found him outside, the release said. He was treated at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett and later transferred to Harborview Medical Center with burns covering 15% of his upper torso, arms and face.
Firefighters contained the blaze within 20 minutes, preventing it from spreading to the market, according to the press release. The cause is under investigation, though officials believe an improperly discarded cigarette may have started the fire.
The Everett Fire Department reminds smokers to follow key safety tips for properly disposing of cigarettes.
• “Ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished before disposal. Dousing the butts and ashes in water or sand before discarding is the best practice.”
• “Use a deep, sturdy ashtray with a wide base on a non-flammable surface.”
• “Avoid throwing cigarette butts in vegetation or near flammable materials, and never use potted plants, as potting soil is flammable.”
Everett firefighters also urge residents to ensure smoke alarms are working and to have a fire evacuation plan with at least two exits. Once outside during a fire, do not go back inside, the release said.
