LYNNWOOD – The Boeing Co. and the Machinists union were among those honored this week by an aerospace organization at an annual conference in Lynnwood.
The Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance handed out three awards to people and businesses at its 11th annual conference. The organization also gave out $20,000 in scholarships to be used by 14 students in the region to pursue aerospace education.
PNAA’s chairman, Kevin Steck, presented the chairman’s award to Boeing and the Machinists union, recognizing the recently signed labor accord that ensures the jet maker’s 737 MAX will be built in the Puget Sound region. The aerospace company and union signed a new contract in late 2011, nearly a year before the existing agreement was to expire.
Brad Lawrence of Esterline was awarded the executive of the year prize by PNAA. Headquartered in Bellevue, Esterline operates a control systems manufacturing facility in Everett for its Korry offshoot. In 2011, Esterline bought French connector company Soriau, which was valued at more than $750 million.
PNAA gives the executive award to the head of a Pacific Northwest aerospace company that has made a significant contribution to the industry.
The organization also recognized GM Nameplate as the company of the year. The Seattle-based GM Nameplate manufacturers interface components, including touch screens, overlays and complex switch assemblies. The award is given by PNAA to a company that exhibits exceptional organizational and managerial characteristics.
PNAA and seven businesses, including Esterline, GM Nameplate, LMI Aerospace, The Asko Group, Inceptra, the Machinists union and the Boeing engineers union, collectively contributed $20,000 in scholarships to 14 students, who received between $1,000 and $1,500 each.
The PNAA board additionally announced the first recipient of the Karl Fagan Memorial Scholarship, which recognizes Fagan, a PNAA board member who died last year. Fagan worked at Vector Industries in Everett.
