Freelance tech writer Cathy Lu was on board the same Connexion by Boeing demonstration flight I was this week, and she filed this report noting that not everyone on the plane had a smooth connection to Connexion.
Key Quote: “That’s a main problem with in-air broadband: Random glitches can occur, and an SAS flight isn’t going to have experts who can help you troubleshoot.”
I saw that too. The tech-savvy bloggers were able to use Connexion to do all kinds of cool things. But some of us ordinary shlubs had some troubles. (Like the guy who works for a competing newspaper we won’t name, who wasn’t able to connect at all.)
For me, Connexion worked just fine. The only issue was that the software The Herald uses to allow us to connect to our e-mail from outside the network loads VERY slowly, especially at 56K dial-up speeds, which is about what Connexion offers. And if I try to do something else while that program is loading — like write a story on Notepad — the computer’s gonna crash.
Plus I hate typing on laptops — always hit the mouse pad with the base of my hand, sending the cursor skittering all over the screen.
