Boeing announces layoff warnings around Puget Sound

EVERETT — The Boeing Co. issued advanced layoff notices to about 180 employees across the aerospace company, including 56 in Washington, according to a state filing.

The number of workers actually laid off could be lower if some land in other jobs in Boeing, retire or otherwise voluntarily leave the company, said Paul Bergman, a spokesman for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

“We value our employees and provide a variety of career-transition services for those impacted by these reductions,” he said.

The job cuts make up a tiny fraction of the company’s workforce, which was nearly 155,000 at the end of September. However, that is about 5,000 fewer than when the year began.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes has cut nearly 4,000 jobs in 2016, as it trims costs. Most of those cuts have been in Washington, where most BCA workers are based.

“All of our activities are intended to make Boeing more competitive and provide greater value to our customers,” Bergman said.

Even with the cuts, “across the enterprise, we continue to hire for critical skills,” he said.
