On Tuesday, Boeing handed the U.S. Air Force its proposal for supplying the agency with KC-767 aerial refueling tankers.
The Chicago-based plane maker will compete for a $40 billion deal with the team of Northrop Grumman-EADS, which also submitted on Tuesday its proposal based on Airbus’s A330 jet.
If it wins the competition, Boeing said on Wednesday it would build the tanker at its Everett factory, where the commercial version of the 767 has been built since its inception. The company’s Wichita, Kan., team will install military refueling systems and conduct flight tests.
