“Doing Business God’s Way,” by Dennis Peacocke, recommended by Christian Kar, president and CEO of Silver Cup Coffee Co. in Lynnwood
“I was given this book at a time when I was re-evaluating how I had come to view money, and just beginning to understand the purpose behind my business. As I wrestled with the questions ‘What’s the point of my business (aside from solely fueling my lifestyle)?’ and ‘Not what do I do, but why do I do what I do?’ and ‘Am I even supposed to continue to be in business?,’ this book helped me to realize things from God’s perspective.
“I am not finished with the book yet, but one of the thoughts that resonates with me the most is that God created and owns all private property, and that we are not ‘owners’ of these material things, but rather ‘stewards.’ After all, it’s pretty clear we can’t take them with us. When I really get my head around that thought, it puts me in a mindset of abundance vs. scarcity. I used to operate from scarcity, so that I had to hoard goods and resources for myself — it was a very selfish motivation — even though I may have been generous by most people’s standards. Now, I realize that I have everything I need (especially the most important things that money can’t buy), and then some. I want to see others thrive — those who don’t have everything they need. As a business owner, I have a prime opportunity and responsibility to be an example to others by how I choose to operate my business.”
