What has the power to shut down nuclear power plants, cause malfunctions in fighter jets and even affect the space shuttle?
Whiskers, as it turns out. So-called “tin whiskers” are small, splinter-like things that sprout – for reasons scientists don’t quite understand – from solder and finishes used in electronics.
They’re a big problem, according to this Associated Press story.
Scientists say the banning of lead from inside electronics, done with children’s safety in mind, has exacerbated the problem. The problem, first documented more than 60 years ago, has caused some alarming glitches. NASA even has a Web page devoted to this.
My question is: Can someone invent a shaver to take care of these pesky whiskers?
