FedEx Express has ordered 27 Boeing Co. 767 freighters and two 777 cargo jets, the company announced on Thursday.
“The 767-300 Freighter will be a great complement to our freighter fleet,” David J. Bronczek, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Express, said in a statement.
The total order is worth nearly $5.3 billion at list prices, though customers negotiate discounts. For the 777 freighters, FedEx exercised options from a previous order.
FedEx already has Boeing 777 freighters in its fleet. The cargo company had previously ordered 27 freighters and had received 14 through the end of November, according to Boeing’s website.
In its quarterly earnings report released Thursday, FedEx said it will delay deliveries of its 777 freighters beginning in 2013 in order to “better balance air network capacity to demand.”
The 767 freighter is a new addition to FedEx’s fleet. Boeing will begin deliveries of 767 freighters to FedEx in 2014.
“The 767 is a proven freighter and this order constitutes a strong vote of confidence for its capabilities,” Boeing’s Jim Albaugh said in a statement. “It is an airplane that we will be building for decades.”
The order for 767 is a boost to Boeing’s backlog. Although Boeing won a lucrative contract earlier this year to provide the U.S. Air Force with 767-based tankers, its existing backlog has dwindled to 44 unfilled orders.
