Goodrich ships 787 gear sensors
Goodrich Corp. has shipped the first completed hardware for the 787. The company said it has delivered proximity sensors built at a plant in Vermont to another company that will incorporate them into another system on the new Boeing Co. airplane. There are 138 sensors that will be installed on the landing gear, passenger doors, cargo doors, thrust reversers and other access doors.
Government forms cell phone alert
The government will soon be pinging cell phones and posting on Web sites to warn Americans of impending disasters as it updates its Cold War-era emergency alert system. By the end of next year, the Homeland Security Department expects to be able to send warnings to cell phones, Internet sites and hand-held computers.
Delphi reports loss of $2.4 billion
Delphi Corp., General Motors Corp.’s largest parts supplier, reported a $2.4 billion loss for 2005 in a delayed annual report filed Tuesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company, which filed for bankruptcy protection in October, blamed the loss of $4.21 per share on accounting charges, price pressures from a reduction in GM’s North American vehicle production and increased costs for raw materials.
Investment scams use fake .gov sites
Securities regulators are warning people to be wary of a new investment scam that uses phony government agency Web sites. The National Association of Securities Dealers issued an investor alert Tuesday regarding Web sites using -gov.us in the address, resembling the .gov.xx address of official government sites outside the United States. The scam, through e-mail and faxes, mainly targets people outside America with investment pitches.
Cancer drug profits boost Genentech
Genentech Inc., the nation’s largest biotechnology company in terms of market capitalization, blew past Wall Street expectations on Tuesday with a 79 percent jump in second-quarter earnings, driven largely by the continued popularity of its cancer-fighting drugs. For the quarter ended June 30, the San Francisco-based company earned $531 million, or 49 cents per share, up from the previous year’s $296.2 million, or 27 cents per share.
