EVERETT – Port of Everett commissioner Don Hopkins will seek re-election this fall to the District 3 position he’s held since 1990.
Hopkins, a retired longshoreman and an avid boater, said he’s received strong encouragement to seek a fourth term on the three-member commission.
He said he’s enjoyed working on port projects such as the $400 million Port Gardner Wharf redevelopment, the new rail barge pier and a new marina.
“All of these projects will have a positive economic benefit for the port and the Everett community for years to come,” he said. “While a healthy economy for the port is important to me and to the citizens of the port district, it is equally important that we maintain a good quality of life.”
He said that’s why he supports the port’s efforts to improve waterfront access and recreational opportunities on the waterfront.
Hopkins said that during his tenure he has worked to expand the public boat launch, build a new big-boat marina and also construct a state-of-the-art repair facility.
As a member of the commission, Hopkins said, he has represented the port on the Puget Sound Ports Group, served on the executive board of the Pacific Northwest Water Ways Association and served on Sen. Patty Murray’s task force on the Northern Straits Puget Sound Marine Sanctuary. He is also an active member of the American Association of Port Authorities, a member of the City of Everett’s Charter Review Committee and an executive member of Washington Public Ports.
Hopkins has long been involved in South Everett Little League, been on the Archbishop Murphy High School board of directors and been chairman of his neighborhood association and the Everett Parks board.
Hopkins and his wife, Teri, have one son.
Donald Carter and Phil Johnson will serve as co-chairs for Hopkins’ campaign committee.
