A story that’s already had more plot twists than a full season of Desperate Housewives just got more interesting, as the LA Times reports http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-boeing15feb15,1,4922038.story?coll=la-headlines-business that Boeing is considering moving its tanker production to Long Beach — if the C-17 program is axed.
Key Quote: “‘We have a motivated workforce in Long Beach that really has done a good job working on these kinds of programs for the Air Force,” Bell said during a Lehman Bros. investment conference in Miami. “Obviously, we’re looking at all the options, particularly if the C-17 stops.’ … Bell cautioned that a number of steps would have to occur before the Long Beach plant was spared. … If the Air Force wants a tanker based on the 777, that work would be done in Everett, he said.”
The company backtracked from that, somewhat, later on Wednesday, MarketWatch reported. http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/Story.aspx?guid=%7B5387A2A0%2DF1CE%2D4FD0%2D8364%2D742AE4273F9D%7D&siteid=google&keyword=
Key Quote: ” Defense executive James Albaugh said recently that the company … expects to keep making 767 planes in its Seattle-area plant, even if commercial demand for the line dries up. Military modifications take place in Wichita, Kan. … On Wednesday, the company reiterated that stance. ‘Our assumption has always been that we would build 767 tankers for the U.S. Air Force in Everett, Washington, where commercial 767s and 767 tankers for Italy and Japan are currently produced,’ the company said.”
