The state-run postal service of the United Arab Emirates may give Airbus’s soon-to-be-discontinued A300 freighter a final shot in the arm.
Emirates Post is pondering a 50-plane buy from either Airbus or Boeing, according to a Bloomberg story (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=conewsstory&refer=conews&tkr=BA:US&sid=aa2Uuafm6g3g). The postal carrier would buy Boeing 747s or Airbus A300s to expand its freighter fleet.
Airbus plans to stop taking orders on its A300-600 freighter later this year. The European plane maker recently launched a new freighter, its A330-200 F, but halted work on its only other freighter, the A380 F.
Boeing, which says its freights make up 90 percent of the market, is updating its classic 747 freighter with technology borrowed from its 787. The 747-8 will enter service in 2009.
The Emirates postal service, which will make its decision by August, will sell shares to back its purchase.
