These days, a loaf of good bread can cost more than a gallon of gasoline, say $4.50.
But it doesn’t have to cost that much if you don’t mind buying a loaf that’s closer to its pull date.
Consider shopping at bakery outlets or thrift stores, which sell what’s typically described as day-old bread. There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just closer to going stale than what you see in most stores.
And, of course, it’s less expensive. Most bread you’ll see on the shelves in the outlet stores will be below $2 a loaf. Many are closer to $1.60. And it isn’t just bread you will find for sale. The products that are available vary, buy you can usually find things such as rolls, English muffins, tortillas, pastries, doughnuts and cookies.
Obviously, you need to buy items you plan to eat soon or that you can put in the freezer right away.
Some outlet stores include:
Oroweat Entenmann’s, 1347 State Ave., Marysville, 360-657-4409, and 125 SW Everett Mall Way, 425-745-1669.
Gai’s Northwest Bakery Thrift Stores, 1515 E. Marine View Drive, Everett, 425-252-6260, and 430 164th St. SW, Lynnwood, 425-743-5799.
