EVERETT – Heavy machinery will begin tearing up thousands of square feet of asphalt near Everett Mall today as workers clear the way for a new retail addition.
The new 100,000-square-foot complex, called The Village, will host a Best Buy store, Petsmart and Bed Bath &Beyond.
Mall officials also announced Wednesday that Aaron Brothers, which sells frames and art supplies, also will lease space in the development.
In addition to tearing up the old parking lot west of the mall, workers will relocate and upgrade utilities at the former location of Everett Mall Village, a strip mall torn down two years ago. Last fall, workers demolished a vacant movie theater nearby.
After the parking lot demolition, West Mall Drive will be relocated farther west and concrete foundations for the new stores will be poured. If everything goes on schedule, the new retail buildings at The Village could be rising by March.
The driving force behind the two-year, $30 million expansion and renovation at Everett Mall is California-based Steadfast Cos., which bought the 673,000-square-foot shopping center in June. The mall’s two previous owners delayed upgrades and planned expansions for several years.
During the past six months, workers have improved the mall’s exterior signs, lighting and landscaping, and repaved parking areas. They also have redone the roof on the main mall building and made other upgrades.
Inside the mall, Old Navy and Borders Books &Music are to become “junior anchor” stores. A 16-screen Regal Cineplex theater will be built there, replacing the three screens Regal now operates in the mall.
Renovated entrances and a new front facade for the mall also are planned, according to Steadfast.
