Stevens Pass Mountain Resort opened to skiers and snowboarders on Sunday and will stay open through Wednesday, conditions permitting. If more snow falls, it’s possible a few more days will be added.

Following a low snow year, the ski area had been closed since March 14.

Two lifts, Skyline and 7th Heaven, are running. There are no beginner runs available and the terrain parks are closed.

With low coverage, the conditions can be challenging, said Chris Danforth, VP of sales and marketing for the resort.

“It’s thin coverage at the base area, so you need to be an adept skier,” he said.

Starting about 5 p.m. on Sunday, the convergence zone kicked in and the ski area received about 13 inches of snow in a few hours.

Skiers and riders were stoked, Dansforth said.

“It’s one of the few powder days we’ve had in the Pacific Northwest this season,” he said.

Even with short notice — the resort announced it was open at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday — it still had nearly 900 people come out. On Monday, it was about 400 people.

While that’s a good deal fewer people than usual at this time of year, Danforth said they just wanted to give people one more chance to ski or snowboard.

“We love skiing and riding and we know we have passionate people out there and we just wanted to have a few more fun days,” he said.

The ski area will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $40 for adults, $15 for 70 and older, $28 for ages 7-15, free for those 6 and under. Check the website, www.stevenspass.com, before you head out.
