If you’re just settling in to the calendar year – you’re in trouble.

Subaru has just released the 2024 model year Impreza RS five-door hatchback.

The sixth-generation compact car receives an all-new design, improved performance, enhanced safety features, and updated multimedia technology. Also new for 2024 is the RS trim featuring a 2.5-liter Subaru Boxer engine.

Subaru has streamlined the Impreza model line to greater emphasize the vehicle’s sportiness, versatility and capability. The Impreza comes exclusively as a five-door hatchback, and is available in Base, Sport and new RS trim levels.

RS is designed for those that prefer a driver’s car experience. The upgraded engine delivers a responsive 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque as mated to a Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission). Paddle shifters provide an eight-speed, faux manual driving experience.

And, of course, all-wheel drive and Subaru’s award-winning Eyesight Driver Assist technology are standard on all vehicles, making it a reliable, durable, four-season performer favored by folks in the Northwest and Northeast.

The top-of-the-line RS trim builds on the Sport and adds standard features including an all-weather package; blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert; and automatic emergency steering.

Unique exterior trim elements include RS badging on the front doors and rear hatch; 18-inch alloy wheels in dark gray finish; black finish on the front grille, side spoilers, and side mirrors; and upgraded LED headlights. My tester came with a distinctive “Oasis Blue Pearl” coat of enamel.

The cabin of the RS is further distinguished by gunmetal and simulated carbon fiber interior trim accents as well as sport front seats in black cloth with red cloth bolsters. The RS also includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter handle; aluminum alloy pedals; wireless phone charger; and USB-A and USB-C charging ports in rear center console.

Other standard creature comforts include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming connectivity; power moonroof; AM/FM stereo; rear vision camera; SiriusXM, and a Harman Kardon 10-speaker audio system with 432-watt equivalent amplifier.

With its low center of gravity, I was impressed with the Impreza’s agile handling. The RS took corners at speed with aplomb and acuity, providing confidence and performance simultaneously.

It also delivered a smooth, quiet ride enabling passengers to converse without raising of voice.

The compact seats five adults in a bit of a squeeze, and delivers 29 miles per gallon in combined city/highway driving.

Completing the Eyesight safety suite is blind-spot detection with lane keep assist and rear cross-traffic alert. The safety feature works with EyeSight and blind-spot detection to assist with steering control to help avoid a collision at speeds less than 50 mph.

The rear hatch opens and closes easily, with enough space for everyday life including multiple bags of groceries. If more room is needed, the 60/40 split rear seats fold flat, allowing golf bags, overnight bags, even garden supplies to be easily transported.

The 2024 Impreza is manufactured at Subaru’s plant in Gunma, Japan.

Base Price: $28,975

Price As Driven: $31,045

Destination charge is included in base price. Vehicles are provided by the manufacturer. List price may vary at local dealerships.
