For my money, the best option for auto consumers today is a plug-in hybrid model. And one of the best in that category is the 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge AWD Ultimate. My tester happened to include a “Dark Theme.’

A plug-in hybrid delivers the best of both worlds. An all-electric option when desired, which in this case provides up to 40 miles range in “Pure Mode.” And hybrid practicality and efficiency that brings the car’s total range to 560 miles on a tank of gas.

“For many customers, a plug-in hybrid is their first experience in driving electric,” said Anders Gustafsson, President & CEO, Volvo Car USA. “This upgrade will show so many the benefits of an electric future, and serve as a stepping stone on their own journey toward full electrification.”

Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

Powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct inject engine with electric motor and high voltage batteries, the XC60 generates a combined 455 horsepower, and 523 lb-ft of torque. Power is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with start/stop. It moves from 0-to-60 in 4.5 seconds.

XC60 seats five adults without complaint, with a rear cargo door opening to reveal a generous storage area, enhanced when the second row seats are folded down.

A new and improved e-motor increases the power in the rear wheels by approximately 65 percent, enhancing performance and drivability in all scenarios. Together with the three-layer battery, the upgraded e-motor also enables better all-wheel drive capability which can prove particularly useful at low speeds, when towing, or when driving on slippery roads that demand extra traction and stability.

The suite of upgrades includes the addition of one-pedal drive, which can help deliver an especially smooth and intuitive driving experience. The function, already seen on pure electric Volvo models, gives the driver the option of controlling both acceleration and deceleration with only the accelerator pedal.

The extra battery capacity also comes in useful on cold winter days, as well as in scorching heat. Even when the car is not plugged in, drivers are able to pre-heat or pre-cool the cabin remotely via the Volvo Cars app while maintaining all-electric driving range.

Inside or out, there is no angle from which the XC60 Recharge doesn’t look great. The interior is an exceptionally well executed example of Scandinavian design, with an emphasis on high quality materials and understated tranquility. Outside, you’ll find Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, as well as 20-inch, diamond cut, alloy wheels.

Luxury and convenience features are highlighted by Nappa leather seats (heated and ventilated), laminated panoramic sunroof with power sunshade, Harman Kardon premium sound, crystal gearshift from Orrefors of Sweden, air purifier, ambient interior illumination, front, rear, and side park assist, and a 360-degree surround view camera.

Not forgotten are a number of things you expect from a Volvo; practicality, safety, and reliability. All are delivered in spades. Or hearts, if you prefer.

Volvo has always has an excellent reputation for safety, and this has only improved as safety technology has advanced. Tech like the blind spot information system come standard, and so do things like lane-keeping aid, oncoming lane mitigation, and road sign information. The XC60 has the ability to apply brakes automatically, both while traveling forward or in reverse. Even Pilot Assist technology is available, for semi-autonomous driving when it strikes your fancy.
