It may be worth a trip to Issaquah for Village Theatre’s seventh annual Festival of New Musicals if you want to hob-knob with authors and actors or just enjoy the ambiance of a potential new masterpiece in the making.
The festival, which opens tonight and runs through the weekend in Issaquah, has proved to be the launching pad for several of Village Theatre’s most popular new musicals, including “Girl of My Dreams,” “Million Dollar Quartet” and “Little Women,” the last two part of this fall’s mainstage season.
The festival features staged readings of six new musicals -script-in-hand, fully sung presentations of six brand new musicals and five parties throughout the weekend, where Village Theatre members can meet the authors, the actors, and the theater staff, while enjoying delicious refreshments.
The festival is an exclusive Village Originals member benefit.
Anyone can become a member by calling Village Theatre’s box office at 425-392-2202. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”: Taproot Theatre Company’s show has been extended for 15 additional performances through Sept. 1.
With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the retelling of the biblical story of Joseph is set in the 1930s in a Moroccan Night Club. Director Scott Nolte has created an intimate atmosphere on the Taproot stage, using four women and six men to play more than 19 characters.
A four-member band enhances the club feel as band members play a keyboard, stand-up bass, guitar and percussion, creating an unplugged musical style.
It’s a simple approach to this tale of Joseph, his 11 jealous brothers and the crafty pharaoh.
