Torin Webster, 9, of Bothell has been chosen as 2004 ambassador for the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Fleur walk.
Torin was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes five years ago when he got sick and doctors couldn’t figure out why he wasn’t getting better. A glucose test revealed that he had diabetes.
At first Torin used to ask why, said Torin’s father, Gerald Webster.
“I would tell him, “It’s just part of life. You have to take the hand you’re dealt and work with it,” he said.
The young boy has done just that and has formed a team for the walk to be held April 17. The event will raise funds for the American Diabetes Association.
Torin has made dealing with diabetes a priority. He’s very aware of his body and chooses his diet appropriately.
“He’s very open about it and upbeat,” Gerald Webster said.
Torin still loves to play baseball like many boys his age, and when you put him out on the field he’s no different than anyone else.
“I am proud of him,” his dad said. “He doesn’t use this as a crutch.”
Gerald Webster suggests that parents be open about diabetes and its effects, and discuss with their children what’s going on with their bodies.
“He doesn’t let it slow him down,” he said, “or use it as an excuse.”
