Weezer heads to independent label Epitaph Records to release its eighth album, “Hurley,” out Tuesday.
TRIVIA: The album gets its name from the picture on the cover: a close-up of actor Jorge Garcia, who played Hurley on “Lost.”
STANDOUT: The group crafts a moderately enjoyable mid-tempo anthem with “Trainwrecks,” a song for losers of all stripes.
FANS DIG: Horn-rimmed glasses.
ANDY SAYS: Weezer is at its best when it funnels every quirky idea it has into little pop gems. On “Hurley,” Weezer is not at its best. The charmless album is filled with lame lyrics and half-hearted hooks. Songs such as “Where’s My Sex?” and “Smart Girls” feel generic when they’re not outright awkward. The album is a disappointment, an uninspired addition to an often strong catalogue.
Grade: C-minus
