Group like objects: You’ve probably heard this one before, but it’s some of the best advice around for creating a cohesive scene, designer Beth Stibre said. It’s a good idea to group framed pictures instead of scattering them around a room, for example. You can take the idea one step further by putting photographs in matching or near-matching frames within a group.
Update your table: If you have a round table, try covering it with two runners criss-crossed to create a new look. You can replace them for different seasons or update them when you need fresh look. Unlike a frumpy tablecloth, runners will put the wood of your table in view, too.
You ought to get an ottoman: Stan and Vickie Nachtrieb have two custom-upholstered ottomans, one in the living area and another in their den. They can use them, of course, as foot rests, but they also work well as coffee tables when topped with a serving tray or two. Their living room ottoman is on wheels so it’s easy to move and it’s large, about 3 feet by 5 feet.
Most ottomans are easy to reupholster when they become worn or when you need a new look. Hollow ottomans also offer great hidden storage.
But here’s the best part: They cost far less than coffee tables of similar sizes, even when covered in custom-selected fabrics, Stibre said.
“That would be my No. 1 recommendation for any coffee table for any room anywhere. Absolutely,” Stibre said. “It’s way less expensive than a coffee table, unless you buy a coffee table at Fred Meyer.”
