Actor Billy Bob Thornton and band to play gig in Stanwood

STANWOOD — Most people know him as Billy Bob Thornton — the actor, director, screenwriter and former husband of Angelina Jolie.

But to fans of the band The Boxmasters, he is Bud, the singer/songwriter.

In fact, Bud has been a musician longer than he’s been in movies, said Cookie Spirk, who owns Loco Billy’s Wild Moon Saloon in Stanwood. Bud and the Boxmasters will perform at Loco Billy’s saloon Monday as a fundraiser for the Northwest Music Foundation.

Yep, Billy Bob Thornton is coming to Stanwood.

If you don’t have a ticket yet, Spirk encourages you to call ahead or just show up Sept. 12 to see if you can get in. She doesn’t want to turn anyone away.

”I am excited. This is big show for us,” she said. “Yes, he is a movie star, but when Bud is on tour with the band he only wants to talk music. He’s a pretty good singer and a good drummer.”

Spirk’s connection to The Boxmasters is through the band’s tour manager Dave Fowler, a longtime friend.

“Dave called to say they had a gap in their current tour,” Spirk said. “He asked if I wanted them, and I told him of course I did.”

Along with seeing this band on its only stop in the state this time around, people can “feel good that they are helping a great cause, helping musicians,” Spirk said.

The Foundation will host a casual buffet available for all ticket holders as long as it lasts. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Teddy Andreadis, J.D. Andrew and Billy Bob “Bud” Thornton make up The Boxmasters, an American roots-rock band of seasoned musicians whose sound is rich in rhythm and story. Formed in 2007, the band released the self-titled debut record The Boxmasters to critical acclaim. The band has several CDs to its name, and Thornton has four solo albums out. They have opened for the likes of Levon Helms, Willie Nelson and Steve Miller.
