The children in Kathy Challancin’s fourth-grade class at Chain Lake Elementary School in Snohomish took on our solicitation for the best motherly advice they had ever received as a class project. Here are their stories in their own words.

The best piece of advice I got was to treat others like you would like to be, I have used this many times. Sometimes I use it against my sister. Once, my sister was bullying me and I was mean to her the next day, and I said, "Treat others as you would like to be." Remember, mother knows best!

The best piece of motherly advice my mother received was enjoy your children while they’re young. We push them to walk, and talk and then spend the next 18 years telling them to sit down and shutup!

It didn’t take much to make my family cry. When I was three days old, I had to get a shot. My mom and my brothers watched closely as the doctor got the needle ready. When it pricked my skin, I let out a scream and began to cry. My three year old brother was so sad he howled and cried, too. Then my seven year old brother got upset and cried.
And my mom got so upset she cried, too. As the doctor left his office our cries followed him to the lobby. My family all cares for each other very much.

When I was four we were shopping for appliances at Sears.
I asked my mom to open her mouth a close her eyes. She agreed. I placed the object in her mouth.
She said, "What was that?" I answered, "a boo-gar!!"

My mom tells me when I ride my skate board never go on your belly. She tells me that because you can tear your face off. I’m glad she says that because I won’t hurt myself. So when my friends come over I tell them that. That’s why I always take my mom’s advice.

The best motherly advice I ever got was to never quit when you start something. There have been a few times when I’ve wanted to quit. But mom said, "Not until you finish it!" I listened to her and took her advice. I think this will make me a successful person from this advice.

When she was pregnant she was excited and very happy. She was waiting nine months to recive her new born baby. She received a baby girl which was me; now she knows how to be a mom for her first time. She thinks being a mom for the first time ought to be wonderful!

My mom told me that on my first birthday she gave me my own cake. I got it everywhere!
I got it on the floor, on the table, on the chairs even everywhere on me, especially in my hair and eyes!
I think I got more on everything else than in my mouth!

My Mom told me never talk back to people. She said that you get in a lot of trouble if you talk back to grown-ups. So I never did. It worked out really good. I’m glad she taught me that.

My moms favorite memory is when I learned my ABC. I was two years old. I lived in Bothell. My mom used to read me the book Dr. Seuss’s ABC. I still read the book because it’s a really good book for young children to learn their ABCs.

My Mom says that it is very important to be nice to animals. Animals rely on us to take care of them. You shouldn’t litter because it could harm animals. Animals are good companions. I think my Mom is right, it is very good to be nice to animals.

Keep your eye on the ball! My mom screamed! Crack! Ya: good a double! Her advice was, "keep your eye on the ball." It worked. The ball went to the outfield. This was fun!

The most important thing my mother has taught me is that she loves me. She makes sure I have the things I need even if she doesn’t have all she needs. She is always kind and talks to me kindly. She is always willing to help me when my dad isn’t around. Instead of taking the trips she wants we go on the trips that I want to. I love my mom very much.
My mother’s funniest memory is when I started to teethe. I was at my grandma’s house and my father was holding me upside down and when my grandma said, "Bite his nose," And I did! I bit him hard right on the end of his nose and I had teeth.
The happiest thing my mother can remember is when she had me.
