Aptonym: Sandi Cash, accountant

Q: How did your name direct your career path?

A: It really didn’t. I was doing accounting long before I met my husband, and I (told) him I did marry him because of his name. His name is Duane Cash. And my maiden name was Scott. Cash is shorter. He thinks it’s pretty funny when I say that. I work for Bowman Manufacturing, a metal shop up in Arlington. And I have been in accounting for 25 years.

Q: Would you change your name if you could, and why or why not?

A: I wouldn’t, just because it’s short and easy. The only thing I would change is, you would not believe how many people ask me how to spell Cash. They ask, is it “Casch?” So many people ask me, and I say, “It’s just like money.”

Honestly, I didn’t really think about changing my name in the context of my job when I got married. I thought that’s the traditional thing to do, so I’m going to change my name, and then it started to occur to me how neat it was and how it went with my job.

Q: If you could choose another career, what would it be?

A: Probably something to do with exotic animals. I used to work for a private exotic animal farm in Monroe. I was a bookkeeper there for eight years. I raised wallabies in my office and I used a feeding bottle — a really big feeding bottle — to feed baby camels. I really enjoyed that part of my job. That was a fun job. It was very interesting to say the least.

Q: How do you know when someone has picked up on the fact that your name is an aptonym?

A: They usually grin right away and say, “Is that really your name?” Or they say, “How appropriate.” Usually people pick up on it right away or they say, “Any relation?” meaning any relation to Johnny Cash. And I say, Yeah, Uncle Johnny.

Q: How do people react to the combination of your name and job? Do they get it? Any funny stories as a result?

A: As far as funny stories go, when I’m in the grocery store, I usually write a check and the cashier will say, So your name is “Cash” and you are writing a check? So they think that’s pretty hilarious.

I think people, they think it’s neat, and they do remember it. I have a lot of correspondence with my job and they remember me because they think of that accounting gal with that name Cash, and they probably don’t wonder what my name was because people connect with it right away. It’s easy, and short, and goes with the job.
