The June exhibit at Solovei Art Gallery, “The Art of Pastel,” showcases several artists who will display a rainbow of styles.
The exhibit starts Tuesday and runs through June 28 at Solovei, 2804 Grand Ave., Everett. An artists reception is planned from 2 to 6 p.m. June 7.
The exhibit will include landscapes and figurative works by five local artists:
Helen Feeney will present her vibrant landscape paintings, such as delicately colored wild flower meadows that have an almost etched-type quality.
Janet Hamilton uses chalk pastel in a more traditional way by applying layers of color and lots of blending.
Joe MacKechnie is into strong contrasts and has a bold way of using energetic drawing strokes.
Karla Matzke presents nudes and her realistic hard-edge pastels cast drama in color and light.
John Vistaunet works in a precise, realism style and his technique of blending chalk pastels allows him to develop super-realistic figurative paintings.
Paintings and prints: The watercolorlike paintings of Dennis Fisk and the monotype prints of Becky Birinyi will be on display in Lynnwood.
Their work can be viewed today through July 10 at Lynnwood Library Gallery, 19200 44th Ave. W., Lynnwood. The show is presented by the Lynnwood Arts Commission.
Like many Northwest artists, Fisk’s muses are the mountains, forests and seascapes. His favorite medium is gouache, when pigment is suspended in water, and that style clearly depicts Fisk’s view of what happens when we come into contact with the beauty in nature.
Birinyi’s monotype prints and pastel drawings explore light, as well as the tensions between nature and the modern world in urban settings.
Student and teacher: Aquatint or intaglio printmaking, the art of achieving tonal values, is the chosen genre of artist and teacher Douglas Bosley.
Bosley’s work can be seen throughout the month of June in the Edmonds Arts Commission display case at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., Edmonds.
Aquatint is a type of etching where the artist makes marks on a copper or zinc plate. That plate is then inked and pressed against a sheet of paper to transfer the image.
Aside from making his aquatint creations, Bosley has developed a passion for teaching and is an instructional assistant for Martin Lim’s drawing class at Edmonds Community College and for Ed Bereal’s painting class at Western Washington University.
Bosley will pursue graduate study in the fine arts, and will again be a recipient of a scholarship from the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation. Bosley has received the foundation’s visual arts scholarship for several years.
Spiritual shots: The pictures of Mount Vernon photographer Shirley Haley have been described as abstract and close to spiritual.
Haley is the featured artist for the month of June at Deception Pass Art Gallery, 40751 Highway 20, Oak Harbor.
Get more fiber: The second annual group show for students graduating from a University of Washington Extension program has gained attention in the fiber arts community as a place where emerging talent can be seen.
Appropriately, the title of the show is “Emerging” and features the artwork of 21 students, including Snohomish County resident Dorothy McGuinness, a fiber artist who specializes in basket making.
The show begins with an opening reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday and runs through June 30 at All City Coffee, a Pioneer Square gallery and café, 125 Prefontaine Place S., Seattle.
The show will highlight the evolution of traditional fiber arts and this diverse group of area artists. The show includes works of quilting, basketry, knitting, crocheting, felting, surface design, needlework, weaving and other forms of mixed media.
