Have a zombie Christmas: The inevitable zombie apocalypse is a popular discussion here at work. OK, maybe it’s just popular because I keep bringing it up. I keep asking if people have a “zombie plan” and, in case of an actual zombie uprising, do they have a safe house available?
Valve’s “Left 4 Dead” gives us a trainer for that day.
“Left 4 Dead” is an FPS four-player cooperative game in which you and three of your fellow survivors run around with various weaponry whilst the undead try to munch on your frontal lobe. If that sounds easy enough, then you are in for a shock because in this game, it is all about the co-op play. If you don’t play as a team, then expect to get owned. Fast.
The story isn’t as important as the atmosphere, that tension that settles up in your neck as you wait for another wave of undead to rush you.
Valve has become famous for black humor in such titles as Portal. “Safe Rooms” are scattered throughout the levels that allow you to rearm and resupply, but have messages left by other survivors, such as, “I didn’t deserve this; maybe you did but I didn’t do anything.”
Yes, “Left 4 Dead” came out in November, but I didn’t get to review it with all the other titles and more’s the pity. Go pick up “Left 4 Dead” and enjoy some hordes of shuffling, mindless living dead — which is preferable to the shuffling, mindless living dead that are still shopping for Christmas presents at Alderwood mall.
Do yourself a favor and buy yourself or a loved one a zombie apocalypse trainer for the holidays. You’ll never know when it might come in handy.
