Bookshop beat

Head on down to Seattle Mystery Bookshop for a twofer at noon on Monday: Kirk Russell signs “Night Game,” about undercover Fish and Wildlife agent John Marquez, and Denise Sietz signs her latest book, “Eye of Newt” and the paperback release of “Footprints in the Butter.”

Warren McDonald, an Australian climber who was trapped under a boulder for two days, recounts his harrowing experience in his book “A Test of Will.” MacDonald, who had to have both legs amputated because of the accident, will read and sign books at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Third Place Books

William Schroder, author of “Cousins of Color,” a historical novel set in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War, will discuss his book at 7 p.m. Thursday at Edmonds Bookshop.

Photographers Terry Donnelly and Mary Liz Austin, who collaborated with journalist and writer Tim Egan on “Wild Seattle,” will be at Third Place Books at 7 p.m. Thursday to talk about their venture, an exploration of many natural treasures in the Puget Sound area.

Costume affairs

Dust off your goblin costume and head for Third Place Books on Halloween to meet the masters of all-things scary in the fairy world, Brian Froud and Ari Berk, whose compendium of goblin lore, “Goblins,” is haunting the shelves right now. The frightening begins at 2 p.m. Oct. 31. Purchase of the book ($25) at Third Place entitles you to a numbered spot in the signing line.

Speaking of creeps, bring the little ghosts and goblins to the Everett Public Library for some Halloween stories and celebrations. The fun begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Evergreen branch and at 4 p.m. Thursday at the main library.

“One Book”

The Everett Public Library and Sno-Isle Libraries will present a community book discussion at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at the main library.

The program, “Two Counties, One Book,” will talk about “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress” by Dai Sijie, a short novel set in China during the Cultural Revolution. Two young storytellers discover a trove of forbidden Western literature, which opens up a new world to them, with unexpected consequences.

Readers who would like to participate in the discussion of the book should register by calling 425-257-8000. For details, call Scott Condon, the public services librarian at Everett library, at 425-257-7638 or e-mail him at scondon@ci.everett.wa.us.
