One of the ways for infantry to stop a German Hetzer tank destroyer was with the help of a high-powered anti-tank rifle.
The skirts above the tracks of the machine were fitted to stop such attacks from the side.
The FHC’s Hetzer shows evidence of another way to foil an enemy rifleman. Blasting the vehicle’s viewing periscopes could effectively blind a “buttoned up” crew, leaving them vulnerable to additional attacks.
In order the keep riflemen guessing, the Hetzer has mock periscope slots painted on the hull near the real one.
